Many companies require a credit card in the main driver's name in order to hold the deposit.
The credit card requirement wrecks more bookings at the desk than almost anything else. Many companies will not accept debit cards because they need to hold the excess, and a debit card cannot block funds the same way.
Typical conditions are: a credit card, in the main driver's name, with enough available limit for the deposit, and often embossed (raised numbers). A card in your partner's name does not count, even if they are travelling with you.
It is tied to the deposit: if the company holds €800 to €1,500 against the excess, it needs an instrument that allows that block. Remove the excess and the reason disappears.
Since we hold no deposit on cars, you can book with a debit card and you do not need a high-limit credit card. All we ask for is a valid licence held for a year, photo ID, and a credit or debit card.
