Approved helmet

Compulsory for rider and passenger, and must carry the ECE mark on its label.

In Spain a helmet is compulsory for rider and passenger on any motorcycle or moped, including in town and on short journeys. There are no exemptions by engine size.

What "approved" means

That it meets European standard ECE 22, whose mark appears on a label stitched to the strap. A helmet without that mark is not valid however solid it looks, and riding with one is penalised the same as riding bare-headed.

The strap must be fastened and adjusted. Wearing the helmet unfastened counts as an offence, and in a fall it does nothing at all.

Size and condition

A helmet that moves around does not protect you. It should sit firmly without pinching, and not shift when you turn your head. If you are borrowing one, check it for impacts too: a helmet that has taken a knock is finished even if it looks fine outside.
