Taking the vehicle out of Spain usually needs prior authorisation and sometimes costs extra.
Taking a hire vehicle out of Spain is not permitted by default. Almost every contract restricts use to national territory unless expressly authorised, and going ahead without telling anyone can void your insurance cover.
Portugal is usually authorised without difficulty, sometimes with a small supplement. France and Andorra depend on the company. Morocco is almost always prohibited, including by ferry.
Portugal comes with a practical detail: its motorways use barrier-free electronic tolls, and a Spanish-registered car needs to be registered with a payment system. That cannot be sorted out en route.
Roadside assistance may have different cover abroad, or none at all — which is precisely when you need it most. It is worth asking about that specifically, not just whether crossing is allowed.
If your plans involve crossing the border, tell us when booking. We confirm whether it is possible with that vehicle, what conditions apply and how assistance works. Flagged in advance it is not a problem; the problem is finding out afterwards.
Zero-excess insurance, no deposit, unlimited kilometres and free cancellation up to 72h before.
