Tolls

The AP-7 between Alicante and Tarragona stopped charging tolls in 2020 — many guides still say otherwise.

The most out-of-date fact in circulation: the AP-7 between Alicante and Tarragona stopped charging tolls on 1 January 2020, when the concession ended. Driving the Costa Blanca by motorway costs nothing.

That changes how it makes sense to get around. People used to avoid the AP-7 and use the N-332 to save money. Today the choice is different: the motorway is faster and more direct; the N-332 runs through the towns with better views but far more roundabouts and traffic lights.

Where tolls do remain

Several motorways in the north and interior are still tolled, such as the AP-6, AP-51, AP-61 and AP-68. If your route leaves the Valencia region, check the specific stretch rather than assuming it is free.

If you cross into Portugal

Portugal uses barrier-free electronic tolls on several motorways, and a Spanish-registered vehicle needs to be registered with a payment system to use them. If Portugal is in your plans, tell us when booking: it is not something that can be sorted out on the road.
