How a penalty is handled with a hire car, and why it ends up costing more.
When a hire vehicle is fined, the notice goes to the registered keeper, which is the company. It then identifies the driver to the authorities, as it is legally required to do, and from that point the fine is yours.
Almost every company also charges an administration fee for processing that identification, typically €30 to €60, added on top of the fine and charged to your card. It is legal and it is in the terms.
So a €100 speeding fine easily becomes €140.
At the entrances and exits of the towns along the N-332, where the limit drops from 90 to 50 to 30 within a few hundred metres. And on urban streets: since 2021 the general limit on single-lane roads is 30 km/h, which covers most of central Calpe, Altea and Jávea.
Blue-zone parking penalties work the same way: they reach the company and are passed on with its fee. In summer, a parking meter costs considerably less than the combination.
We tell you if a notice arrives and give you the details so you can appeal where appropriate. The most useful advice remains the obvious one: in town, 30.
