Gross vehicle weight

Gross vehicle weight is the maximum the vehicle can weigh loaded, including cargo, passengers and fuel. It appears on the registration document and determines which licence you need to drive it.

The category B limit

A category B licence covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg gross weight. Above that you need a C1 or C licence, and at that point it stops being a consumer rental.

That is why standard hire vans sit just below the threshold: they are designed so anyone with a car licence can use them.

Careful with overloading

Gross weight is not only an administrative matter. Driving over the limit is an offence and, more importantly, changes the vehicle's braking and stability — particularly on the mountain roads around here. On a house move it is easy to exceed it without noticing.

How we do it at Neptuno
