Load capacity (m³)

Load capacity is measured in cubic metres and indicates the usable volume of the cargo area. It is the figure people look at first when hiring a van, and the one that translates worst into "will my move fit?".

What fits in each size

3.3 m³ (Citroën Berlingo): a big shop, a couple of appliances, a studio flat move. Fits in normal parking spaces.
6 m³ (Ford Transit): a one or two bedroom flat, usually in two trips. The most commonly hired size.
12 m³ (Fiat Ducato): a whole house. Needs room to manoeuvre and to load.

What cubic metres do not tell you

Two figures matter as much as the volume: the usable length — which decides whether a sofa or mattress goes in — and the rear door height. A tall wardrobe may not pass through the doors of a van with volume to spare.

And there is a local factor: in hillside villa developments with steep, narrow access, like the Montgó in Jávea or the slopes of Moraira, the large van does not always fit comfortably. Two trips with the medium one is often the better answer.
